AMAZING book for beginners. I learned how to tune my guitar, the name of the chords and the basic chords. If you know NOTHING about guitars and want to learn how to play it, definetly get this book.*If this review was helpful for you, please click on "Helpful"*
If you want to start playing guitar rather than reading about how to play guitar, this is a decent book. While lacking in detail, it is probably the fastest way to learn the basics of playing guitar. It lacks the depth of some other great books (Guitar for Dummies being a good one, albeit verbose), but if your objective is to start playing as quickly as possible without reading too much, this book is a great option. I think it also helps novices progress through the simple chords early before moving to trickier chords. For the price, you can't go wrong trying it out. I think it could benefit from a few more song tabs in the early stages, however, be aware that there are so many beginner tabs available freely on the internet these days. The book doesn't explain some of the notation used in the tabs (circled numbers vs uncircled, partial chords, tick marks, finger positioning), which would have been very helpful. Overall, I'd recommend this book to a beginner who wants to play guitar quickly, but I do *not* advise this book for those who want to *learn* how to play guitar I would advise another more in-depth book to supplement (the Dummies book is great). This book will likely get you through the first month or two of learning guitar.--------Update 1.5 years later:For those stumbling across this review and wondering what I found to be the best teach-yourself guitar book: I highly recommend Justin Guitar's introductory course.
If you are new to guitar, and don't know how to read music, this book is for you. It is straightforward, and simple using the tablature method rather than standard music theory-which will give you a basic start on beginning to understand reading music and music theory later on if you choose. By taking some time doing the exercises, I was strumming away faster than I thought and have also learned that their are a number of music sheet books with tab measures which can let you go on beyond this book and play a lot of different forms of music. It is geared toward the absolute beginner, and is not overwhelming. I can say that it has helped me, but like anything else it does take practice.
So far this book is being very good to me as I begin to teach myself to play guitar. Everything is pretty straightforward and easy to understand, and I would definitely recommend this book to friends and family. I do have prior musical knowledge, but the book explains the basics really well for beginners and gives you several songs to learn to play as you progress.
If you've never touched a guitar, this is the book for you. In the first four pages it explained every part of a guitar, which string did what, which fingers played what keys, how to tune your guitar, and how to play a chord. The back cover shows what I believe are all major and minor cords. You then have enough chords to play the simple songs that complete the book. It makes everything simple and concise. If you know all these things now, this is not the book for you.
It's a book by Hal Leonard Corp need I say more! But seriously I bought it to refresh my memory but if new this book would have you playing fast it's well written and I think anyone would benefit from it's content. If wondering if you should buy I say yes it's a great price for value and great guitar book
