Perhaps I was misled by other reviews describing this book as "very technical", with content that could potentially be "over the head" of beginners. As a pro photographer who simply has never hasd the chance to do food photography, I was expecting SO much more. I read the entire thing in 35 minutes.Entire chapters dedicated to basic stuff like what is shutter speed, why not use a high ISO, and what a Photoshop layer is. Pulease!Appart from that, the author seems to be a skilled enough cook so as to have a truly basic styling technique. She just cooks awesome food she intends to eat, places it carefully on a plate with an eye on composition and details in terms of contrasting and complimentary colors and voila! She achieves truly great food photos. No tricks, no weird tips, except for carton spacers on sandwiches and fake ice cubes in beverages. Period. Her camera setup is virtually always the same: 5D MKii with 70-200mm lens, almost always on 180-200mm for compression and 5.6f for shallow depth of field. Her lighting setup is also pretty much the same: strong diffused backlight, with slight variations on how she bounces it from the front. So no big revelations there either.Literally my 5 takeaways (more like confirmations of stuff I had already heard about) were:1- Use stand-ins to prevent stuff fromwilting while you light.2- Use a hand steamer to fake steam.3- Use a fire starter iron to accentuate or create BBQ style marks on meat.4- Use a creme brûlée torch to add charring effects where needed.5- Amass a significant collection of plates, silverware, napkins and tablecloth fabrics as props.There. If you are already are a photographer, I just saved you ten bucks.
I absolutely loved this book. As an architectural photographer, I needed to transition my skills into food photography. This book was perfect. It emphasizes it's instruction on the 20% of effort that gets 80% of the results. There's not too much emphasis on photography basics that are not necessary for most photographers. It helps people that don't need to spend money on equipment that gives them diminishing returns on the final result in the quality of the photo. There are a lot of good pictures and diagrams to help demonstrate her setups. It is a huge improvement over the 1st edition, even though I loved the 1st edition as well. The author comes across as humble and passionate. I love that.
If you are just getting started in photography, this book is a real gem. However, if you have been working as a pro photographer for nearly 10 years or so as I have, then you will find this book to be EXTREMELY basic. Was it worth the cost of ownership? I did gain from some of the prop ideas that I picked up because I am brand new to food photography, but most of the book is about the basics of lighting, composition, exposure and some very basic photoshop. I will continue to build my new food photography craft with other books that I find on Amazon as well as online tutorials. However, pro photographers that already have a good grasp of the basic concepts of photography might want to start their quest for knowledge about food photography from a different source.
For a new food photographer this book was excellent. Really informative and easy reading. I love all the tips and example photos. I read the whole thing in about an hour- then I found out it's the textbook for my Food Photography class next semester! :D
I thought this book was great. It takes you from the basics of equipment selection and an overview of the mechanics of digital photography to specific examples from start to finish. I'm a long-time photographer and knew a lot of the info in the first half of the book but it was well written and easy to follow - a good refresher and essential to those who are just starting out. Then the author gets into the specifics of lighting food, prepping it for the shoot, and what she does with the images in Photoshop once the image is captured. Some photography books paint the examples in very broad strokes. They are basically idea books. This is not one of those. If the reader so desired, the examples could be duplicated from the descriptions and pictures provided.I think this is a great book on food photography but it even succeeds as a basic introduction to digital photography.
Nicole really did a good job here with this book. I was given a food photography assignment last month so I needed a book to learn the fine art of food photography quickly. I was able to pick up on recommended angles & camera settings by reading this book on the Kindle.Nice job Nicole.
