About the Author
Born on 17 December 1870 at Waterford in Ireland, Michael Sheehan was educated at St John's College Waterford before going on to tertiary studies at Oxford, the University of Grufswold and the University of Bonn. His studies for the priesthood were undertaken at Maynooth - mother of so many of the priests who built up the Church in Australia. He was ordained on 16 June 1895. Great scholar that he was, he joined the professional staff of Maynooth and became vice-president of the seminary in 1919. He was a leading activist in the restoration of the Gaelic language, as well as being a Latin and Greek scholar. At 51 years of age he was appointed Co-adjutor Archbishop of Sydney and consecrated on 28 May 1922 with right of succession to Archbishop Kelly. What a remarkable apostolate was his during the 15 succeeding years in Australia. The hallmarks of his episcopal labours in Australia were his love of the Mass and the Blessed Sacrament, his energetic, systematic and scholarly care for truly Catholic education and educators, his marvellously successful books for faith education and his constant concern for the spiritual welfare of the priests of the Archdiocese. He was energetically involved in developing The Australian Catholic Record and the Catholic Evidence Guild and the great 1928 International Eucharistic Congress in Sydney. His work in education was constant, energetic and thorough. He organised and addressed annual conferences for Catholic school teachers. He wrote hugely popular texts - the Child Book of Religion whose aim was 'not only to teach children religion but also to teach them to be religious: not only to teach them what they must believe and do in order to be saved, but also to help them to love Our Lord and Saviour with a great, personal love, and to love the Church He founded'. The masterpiece of his writing was Apologetics and Catholic Doctrine which became a standard work throughout much of the English-speaking world! in upper secondary religious education, adult education and the instruction of converts as well as general readership. This remarkable prelate was noted for his devout simplicity; a brilliant intellectual noted for his almost childlike love of God and after God of the Blessed Virgin. It was said of him that 'his manner was easy, but those nearest to him knew that his graciousness, though real and absolutely sincere, was the defence mechanism built by nature round a very shy and sensitive man. He would never spare himself for child, religious sister or teaching brother. He was the defender and sympathiser of all who, like himself, were exposed to rougher usage than nature meant for them'. In 1937 it was decided that the next Archbishop of Sydney should be Australian born. Our saintly scholar and energetic faith educator found his right of succession at odds with the times. His resignation became effective on 1 July 1937. He retired to Ireland where he died on 1 March 1945, aged 74.

APOLOGETICS
INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER
Summary
I. Apologetics defined; its aim is to prove the divine Authority of the Catholic Church; its study, a duty and a discipline. The nature of its proof; its proof, conclusive but not coercive.
II. The two methods of proof: (1) the more elaborate method, arguing from the New Testament as history; (2) the simpler method, arguing from our knowledge of the Church herself. - The more elaborate method, adopted in the body of the text; reasons. The simpler method, presented in Chapter 12.
III. The relation of Apologetics to Faith.
I
Apologetics. DEFINITION. Apologetics is the science concerned with the defense of the Catholic religion. Its aim is to prove from reason the divine authority of the Catholic Church. Advancing through a series of connected truths, it concludes that the one and only guide of faith on earth is the Catholic Church, Holy and Infallible. It leads unbelievers to the portals of the House of God, and bids them enter. Within, they hear the Catholic Doctrine, Christ's message to them interpreted by His living representative.
Beginners will note that the words Apologetics and Apology, though derived from the same Greek root, have come to have very different meanings. Apology, as commonly used, may signify nothing more than an excuse, or an appeal for forgiveness, whereas Apologetics always denotes a scientific proof or defense of religious truth. "Catholic Apologetics", therefore, is not a mere appeal for the acceptance of Catholicism or a plea for its toleration but a solid demonstration that it is the one and only true religion.
ITS STUDY FOR CATHOLICS: A DUTY AND A DISCIPLINE. We may already possess in simple form an appreciation that our faith in the Church and her teaching is a reasonable faith. Perhaps we have heard it defended by convincing arguments put before us in some brief form, such as the following: (1) "Christ the Son of God founded a Church to teach all mankind. He promised to be with her all days even to the end of the world. Because of this perpetual help, His Church must claim to teach people as He taught them: she must claim to be infallible in her teaching. The Catholic Church is the only religious body in the world that makes that claim. She alone therefore is the Church founded by Christ." (2)"The great antiquity of the Catholic Church, her marvelous growth, her unconquerable endurance, her wondrous holiness, her inexhaustible fruitfulness in all charitable works, her power of holding her vast following together—despite every assault upon her unity—so that, in spite o!
f all manner of differences in race and culture and ambitions, they remain ever one in faith, in worship, in obedience—it is the combination of all these characteristics that sets the Church quite apart from merely human institutions and marks her plainly as the work of God."
But, as we advance in secular knowledge, so also we should advance in our knowledge of our holy religion. We should seize the full content and plumb the depth of these simple proofs; we should familiarize ourselves with the whole network of argument by which our faith is defended. The age in which we live is hostile to God, to Christ, and to His Church. It is our duty, therefore, to master the proofs set forth in Apologetics, so that we may have a fuller vision of the reasonableness of our faith, of the enormous strength of its defenses, and of the weakness of the objections alleged against it. It is our duty to remove temptation from our path, and to fortify ourselves against the spirit of infidelity that infects the very air we breathe. It is our duty to acquire sufficient enlightenment to enable us to answer the questions that may be addressed to us by the honest inquirer. The exhortation of St Peter to the early Christians to "be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you", is as applicable to us as it was to them. Besides bringing the reward of a duty fulfilled, the study of Apologetics is in itself a valuable mental discipline: it stimulates and develops our reasoning powers by setting them to work at problems of profound importance and of unfailing interest.
