I bought the older version of this book. The exercises contained within the older version with the orange and white cover and this newer version are exactly the same, however the difference is the printing. The older version is not as crowded and it is printed with much more contrast as compared to the new version (pictured). I personally find that the older version is easier for me to work with as a beginner student. My cello instructor has also found that for new students the older version is less overwhelming. Older versions are available from the various sellers of used books. That having been said this is an excellent book for beginners and the little etudes are not only fun to play but they each teach another aspect of technical playing.
This book is for serious cello students (and experienced players). If your a beginner (as I am) you will feel like you have been thrown into the deep end of the pool...but the experience is worth it. I highly recommend this volume for all cello players and volumes 2 and 3 when you think you a good cello player. If you can make it through those volumes then you really are a good cello player.
This book seemed odd with its exercises, at first. Im a self taught cellist and this book has made me a better player. It teaches hand position and notation without the need to write out notes. I listen to the piece as i play, pairing up a digital tuner to ensure im on key, since i do not use fingerboard stickers, at all. I keep a chart of notes to the side as i first learned each new note, but this book took the need away for any other self learners and has improved my speed and playability. The book is sturdy, much like othwt college books. Im impressed.
These studies are clearly superior to the others for cello beginners I have had exposure to. Sixty years ago I began studying theDouble bass and my memories of those studies are quite dim. Moreover, I had a great teacher who happened to be the principal bassof the NY Philharmonic who had received his training at the Paris Conservatory and who selected the curriculum for next. Now I am doing the learning on my own, which is doable because of my long previous experience with the bass. The Schroeder is quite satisfactory basedon my limited exposure to cello studies, and honestly, I am delighted to be working with this material.
This collection is a keystone of cello technique. The etudes are focused and productive, if you take the time to do them exceedingly well. As one of my teacher's said, don't practice mistakes, practice doing it right. Master the etudes in this volume and you'll be ready for all beginner and most intermediate and even some advanced cello repertoire. A great way to prep for orchestra music. No cellist is complete without a copy of this somewhere. Even the most advanced musician will find it beneficial to review the basics on a regular basis.
Lets face it scales and exercises are the foundation of good playing. Although these exercises start out fairly easy they increase and challenge your skill. For me they sounded good enough to make me feel like I was playing really well and as I continued to move through the more difficult exercises, I had a real sense of achievement as my playing improved
I find the exercises in this book very useful with gradual increase in difficulty as you proceed to build up technical skills. I just like the idea of having a single book that combines the various famous cello studies such as Lee, Dotzauer, Duport and others. It is so nicely arranged that one can just practice the exercises across various composers. Love it and thinking of getting Book 2 & 3 when I am half way through this one.
If your student is starting to get bored with the stuff in her school book, check this out for some more advanced practice.
